Material for Mentors
First, many thanks to you for taking on this very important role in the programme. Mentors are vital to the task of helping students on the PGCE and Cert Ed to make connections between the theory of the course and the practice of work, and to relate the generic material of the course to the specifics of their particular areas of practice. You are the experts with an in-depth knowledge of teaching particular subjects or learners which the tutors cannot match.
We shall try to support you as much as possible in your work with your student(s), with training sessions and events such as mentor groups or three-way discussions with tutor and student. However, the diversity of the programme is such that it does not make sense to be presciptive about the forms such support should take; simply feel free to make contact with tutors as you need to.
